City of Sanibel to Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of September 11th with “Waves of Remembrance” Ceremony
Event Date: Friday, September 11 at 8:15 a.m.
Event Location:
Sanibel Community House 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel
Community remembrance will honor the lives lost, recognize first responders, and include a special announcement about a major 2027 9/11 initiative.
The community is invited to gather for a meaningful morning of remembrance honoring the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who rushed toward danger, the members of the military who answered the call in the years that followed, and all those who continue to live with the lasting impact of that day.
The ceremony will bring together City leaders, Sanibel Police, Sanibel Fire Rescue District, local students and community members for a program centered on remembrance, reflection, service and unity.
The ceremony is being held in conjunction with the City of Sanibel’s A Field of Heroes, a powerful temporary tribute at neighboring Sanibel Community Park. The display features 2,977 American flags, with each flag individually representing a person whose life was lost on September 11.
Created through the support of sponsors, volunteers, community organizations, businesses, and first responders, A Field of Heroes will transform the park into a place for quiet reflection and remembrance during this milestone anniversary.
Following the ceremony, attendees are encouraged to spend time at Community Park walking among the Field of Heroes and reflecting on the individual lives represented throughout the display.
The morning will also include a special announcement regarding a major 9/11 remembrance initiative planned for Sanibel in 2027. The future project will build upon the community spirit and commitment to remembrance demonstrated through A Field of Heroes, continuing Sanibel’s efforts to ensure that the stories, sacrifices, and lessons of September 11 are passed on to future generations. Additional details about the 2027 initiative will be revealed during the ceremony.
