DESCRIPTION:SanCap Resilience will host its next community event on April 8th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sanibel Community House\, 2173 Periwinkle Way\, Sanibel FL\, and streamed live via Zoom. The program will be presented in collaboration with Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and Community Housing & Resources (CHR). \n“Emerging from Hurricane Ian Stronger and More Resilient – Part 5: Affordable\, Efficient\, and Sustainable Building Practices\,” will feature Dr. Jennifer Languell who holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering and sustainable development. She is also president and founder of Trifecta Construction Solutions. Dr. Languell is a recognized state leader who has championed the integration of “green” building principles and sustainable design within the construction industry for more than 28 years. \nAlso presenting will be James Evans\, CEO of SCCF and Nicole McHale\, Executive Director of CHR. Evans and McHale will report on how two prominent nonprofits in our community are incorporating resilient and sustainable building practices into their reconstruction efforts and why those decisions fit with their organizations’ strategic goals and missions. \n \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to invite their contractor to attend\, as well. \nSanCap Resilience is a coalition of 16 community organizations and concerned citizens. DESCRIPTION:Paul CallomonCollection Manager\, Academy of Natural Sciences\, Drexel University\n \n\n\nPrecious Luster: On Pearls and Value \n​In this wide-ranging and entertaining talk\, Paul Callomon explores the concept of value through one of its best-known historical emblems – pearls. Starting with their genesis within the shells of living oysters\, we see how this one-time natural rarity and talisman of royal status was transformed into a mass-produced product that nevertheless retains its preciousness. \nPaul Callomon is Collections Manager in Malacology and General Invertebrates at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia. Though originally a designer\, his lifelong engagement with shells led him further into collecting\, research\, and publishing about them during a prolonged stay in Japan. His interests today focus on the social history of natural science\, both in the West and in Japan\, and on the museum as a metropolitan and cosmopolitan forum. SUMMARY:League of Women Voters of Sanibel Annual Meeting & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by President of the Sanibel League Cathie Kozik\, the panel will include Rabbi Sunny Schnitzer of Sanibel’s Bat Yam Temple of the Islands\, Reverend Dr. John Danner formerly Pastor of the Sanibel Congregation United Church of Christ\, and Professor and Constitutional Laywer Jane Picker. \nCitizens of this country may think the separation between church and state is enshrined in the Constitution\, but in the last few years\, that separation seems to be getting smaller. Examples include the most recent ruling in Alabama on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)\, potential legislation in Florida that would define conception as the start of life\, and other Florida legislation calling for “chaplains” in public schools to tend to the spiritual needs of students. \nIs this what the Founding Fathers of the Constitution intended? \nDoes the Constitution require complete separation of Church and State\, or merely the benign “non-intervention” in the practice of religion? \nThe League intends for this program to be a lively panel discussion between a Rabbi\, a Pastor\, and a Constitutional Lawyer\, leaving those who attend more informed about where democracy in our nation is headed and about resources that can further help educate our community. All are invited to attend and to come with questions. \nThe April program will be the last program of the 2023-2024 season for the Sanibel League of Women Voters and will include its annual meeting. The League of Women Voters of Sanibel and the U.S. will continue to provide important information and education on all candidates and their platforms as we head into the Nov. 5 General Election. \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy. The League’s enduring vitality and resonance comes from its unique decentralized structure. DESCRIPTION:The Progressive Club of the Islands will hold a program\, “The Fight Ahead for Women’s Reproductive Health in Florida\,” on April 18 at 6 p.m. at The Community House\, at 2173 Periwinkle Way\, Sanibel. \nA potluck buffet will be available before the program. \nPROGRESSIVE CLUB OF THE ISLANDS Dawnyelle Singleton\nThe speaker will be Dawnyelle Singleton\, one of the leaders of the “Yes on 4” campaign. It secured the over 1 million authorized signatures needed to place the abortion question on the November ballot. \nThe club reported that Florida is the site of two competing forces in women’s reproductive health. On one side is one of the strictest anti-abortion enactments in the country — a new law that will go into effect on May 1 prohibiting abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. On the other side is Referendum 4 that\, if enacted into law by 60% of voters in November\, would inscribe the standards of Roe v. Wade in the state constitution and enshrine a right to abortion up to “fetal viability\,” usually about 24 weeks. \nA native of Sarasota\, Singleton is the manager of volunteers and community programs at Planned Parenthood Southwest and Central Florida.
