SUMMARY:Wood for Wings: Owl & Bat Box Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Island Hammerheads\, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF)\, and the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society for a workshop to assemble your own screech owl nest box or bat house. All tools and materials to construct your box will be provided! Multiple people can come together to build a box — you only need to purchase one ticket per box. \nThis event is open to all ages\, but minors should be accompanied by an adult. Nest boxes and bat houses can be mounted on trees. Poles will be available for purchase separately at the event. The Island Hammerheads can be scheduled to come out and assist with installation. \n \nWhy Build an Owl Box or Bat House? \nThere are many benefits to sharing your space with owls and bats\, most notably the free and natural pest control services. Eastern screech owls  (Megascops asio) can eat more than 1\,000 mice in a year. They also eat insects and small reptiles. Owls are fascinating creatures and fun to watch. Installing an owl box allows for a unique opportunity to watch them up close. \nBats are vital to any healthy environment and provide several ecosystem services — benefits that enhance the well-being of humans. The Brazilian free-tail bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is a common native bat species that is well known for occupying bat houses. Only weighing up to 7-12 grams\, it can eat up to 50-100% of its body weight in insects a night\, which translates to a potential of 2\,800 – 4\,800 mosquitos per bat per night! \nBoth bats and owls have suffered from a loss of their natural habitats\, especially after Hurricane Ian devastated Sanibel and Captiva Islands in 2022. You can help support native wildlife by providing the owls with a safe place to raise their young\, and for bats to roost. \nCost Per Box \n• Owl box: $40\n• Bat box (Two-chambered): $40 \nNote\, please allow extra travel time for island traffic on Periwinkle Way.

SUMMARY:COTI's Public Annual Meeting & 50th Anniversary Event
DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATE THE COMMITTEE OF THE ISLANDS’ – AND SANIBEL’S – 50TH ANNIVERSARY AT COTI’S ANNUAL MEETING \nWHILE THE EVENT IS FREE\, SIGN-UP IS REQUESTED.\nClick HERE to reserve your spot for this free event \n“Shifting Sands and Shifted Baselines: The Once and Future Sanibel Plan” will be the topic when Dr. Thomas Ankersen addresses the Committee of the Islands’ annual meeting on Sunday\, March 30. With the impending update of The Sanibel Plan – a critical blueprint for the island’s future\, the talk is a key learning opportunity for all who have an interest in Sanibel. \nDr. Ankersen is emeritus professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law and Director Emeritus of the Florida Sea Grant Legal Program. His presentation at 4:30 p.m. will follow a brief business meeting set for 4:00 p.m. During the program\, COTI will announce the organization’s Citizen of the Year. \n\nProfessor Thomas Ankersen\n  \nThe public is most welcome to attend this special COTI event\, which will be at The Community House\, 2173 Periwinkle Way\, Sanibel. Beverages and appetizers will be served. Information about COTI will be available\, and there will be an opportunity to join or renew membership. \nThe Sanibel Plan has a history like few others and is a National Planning Landmark. The Plan’s origin story dovetails with a broader national and state historical context; its authors are revered planning illuminati. Backed by a committed community\, the Plan – and the city it guides – have stood the test of time\, distinguishing Sanibel from the overdevelopment that characterizes most other barrier islands. \nBut time marches on. A changing climate has created new\, and perhaps existential\, challenges for the island\, its inhabitants\, and its natural resources. After recounting the Sanibel Plan’s venerable history\, Professor Ankersen will address the challenges – and opportunities – Sanibel and its sister islands face as they seek a pathway to climate adaptation. \n  \n
